Children & Young People Counselling
Gentle, age-appropriate support in a safe and respectful space
Counselling children and young people places their wellbeing, rights and emotional safety at the centre of the work. Sessions are child-led and move at a pace that feels comfortable for each young person. I offer a calm, supportive space where children and young people can explore their thoughts and feelings in ways that feel safe and age-appropriate. Building trust is always prioritised.
A Child-Centred Approach
It can be deeply worrying when a child or young person is struggling with their mental health, and many need time to feel safe before choosing what they wish to share. My approach respects each young person’s individuality, allowing them to set the agenda for sessions while feeling supported and understood.
Although confidentiality sits with the child or young person, I remain mindful of their wider relationships and any safeguarding responsibilities, always working ethically and sensitively.
How Sessions May Work
To help young people feel comfortable and curious about their inner and outer world, sessions may include a range of gentle, creative and therapeutic approaches, such as:
- Conversation cards
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques
- Creative activities and play-based work
- Listening to music and reflective discussion
The focus is on helping young people feel safe, engaged and supported. Where appropriate, sessions may gently reframe behaviours that have been described as problematic and focus on strength-building, emotional understanding and problem-solving skills.
Difficulties I Can Support With
I have experience supporting children and young people with a range of challenges, including:
- Anxiety disorders, including OCD and panic attacks
- Feelings of overwhelm
- Bereavement and loss
- Emotional difficulties such as friendships, bullying and relationships
- Emotionally based school avoidance
- Exam and study-related stress
- Family changes and relational difficulties
